(126 votes - 21 comments - 5328 views)
"World's Most Offensive Joke" on Channel 4, 2007

An informative look at those who push the boundaries of comedy, The World's Most Offensive Joke asks what separates the risqué from the offensive, and whether freedom of speech is used as a defence for deliberate and gratuitous disrespect. Is the guilty laughter of schadenfreude still acceptable in an age of political correctness? Topic-by-topic, jokes are revisited: how and to whom they were told, and their consequences.

source: digiguide forums
Lewis Black - Black on Broadway

(17 votes - 3 comments - 639 views)
Lewis Black stars in his first-ever HBO solo special an hour of frenetic take-no-prisoners stand-up comedy taped before a live audience at the Brooks Atkinson Theater in New York City. Featuring new material included in the comic's current "Rules of Enragement" tour and CD of the same name Lewis Black: Black on Broadway will feature Black's dead-on insights into such disparate issues as homeland security tax-cut benefits international travel Martha Stewart cold weather health myths in America "who's fucking who" and of course WMDs. Black's performance in the HBO special "Black on Broadway" is exactly like his "Back in Black" spots on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. If you love his sputtering, furious rants on the fake news, there's no reason you won't enjoy an hour's worth on DVD, during which Black spits out his grievances against typical stand-up comedy fodder--corporate scandals, air travel, etc.--in his usual, direct style. (Good line: "If you're in coach, kill yourself.") The only caveat: you'll get nothing extra here. The disc contains the show, brief shots of his entering/exiting the theater, and that's it. No interviews, no commentary track, not even a set of Spanish subtitles. But since Black's routine is stripped-down anger, perhaps it's fitting for the DVD to be stripped-down Black.
(found on youtube via user TheFourthDrake)

(29 votes - 4 comments - 803 views)
Outspoken and raw, not mincing matters, Bill Hicks tells us that, just like smokers, non-smokers also die every day (with jogging instructor Jim Fixx as an example), asks women what's so terrible about giving head, talks us through what really happened during the 1990-1991 Gulf War and how the used technology could have also been used to feed the poor of the world.

Comedy is merely the hook on which Bill Hicks hangs a series of biting observations about subjects such as drugs and war and government. No cosy anecdotes about the colour of navel fluff to be found here. The high shock factor and skilled delivery almost disguise one of the most nakedly emotional performers of the last 20 years. Because of the depth and resonance of the material this is one of those rarities: a stand up performance that bears repeated viewings. (source: yt)

(18 votes - 1 comment - 606 views)
George Carlin performs a hilarious set of never-before released material in "Complaints and Grievances." His 12th HBO special was recorded live at the Beacon Theater in New York City on November 17, 2001. In "Complaints and Grievances," Carlin shamelessly exposes the people and subjects that irritate him the most. His bold brand of humor forces us to laugh at our own behavior when it comes to disgusting hygiene habits, those annoying family newsletters and people who use credit cards to pay for inexpensive items. This riotous collection includes the routines "Traffic Accidents - Keep Movin'!," "You & Me (Things That Come Off Of Your Body)," "Parents of Honor Students," "Guys Named Todd," and "Why We Don't Need 10 Commandments." (source: yt)

(21 votes - 4 comments - 834 views)
Arguably one of George Carlin's most famous and best performances, "Back in Town" came late in his career but combines all his best trademarks - rants on abortion, religion, sex, politics, bodily functions, and capital punishment. Opening with a vicious rant against "pro-life conservative Americans," Carlin begins bringing up points such as, "These people value the sanctity of life - while you're a sperm." He then bitterly moves on towards the death sentence, noting its proposed expansion to cover drug dealers. "You can't give the death sentence to people who don't care about dying!" If you are new to Carlin this is the best place to start - it's easily accessible and is funny, witty and a scathing attack on American society.
(from yt)

(16 votes - 2 comments - 436 views)
This performance marks the first of the "Angry Carlin" group, and is undoubtedly his best work. From the first line "I haven't seen a group this large since they brought together all the criminals and lawbreakers in the Ronald Reagan administration", through his scathing (and sidesplitting) views of American culture, and the second half on cars and driving, this is a must for any comedy fan.
(from yt)

(19 votes - 1 comment - 726 views)
As many of you have already heard, the tragic news... George Carlin, the "dean of counterculture comedians" whose biting insights on life and language were immortalized in his "Seven Words You Can Never Say On TV" routine, died of heart failure Sunday the 22nd of June, 2008. He was 71. Carlin went into a Santa Monica hospital Sunday afternoon complaining of chest pain and died later that evening, said his publicist, Jeff Abraham. Carlin, who had a history of heart trouble, performed as recently as last weekend at the Orleans Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas. It was announced Tuesday that Carlin was being awarded the 11th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
This is a 2004 interview that James Lipton had with George Carlin in front of a crowd, where Carlin recounts his entire life, from his turbulent childhood onwards... Truly an appropriate upload for today, RIP George... we loved you and your material, and you'll be deeply missed by us all.
(from yt)
