Lewis Black stars in his first-ever HBO solo special an hour of frenetic take-no-prisoners stand-up comedy taped before a live audience at the Brooks Atkinson Theater in New York City. Featuring new material included in the comic's current "Rules of Enragement" tour and CD of the same name Lewis Black: Black on Broadway will feature Black's dead-on insights into such disparate issues as homeland security tax-cut benefits international travel Martha Stewart cold weather health myths in America "who's fucking who" and of course WMDs. Black's performance in the HBO special "Black on Broadway" is exactly like his "Back in Black" spots on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. If you love his sputtering, furious rants on the fake news, there's no reason you won't enjoy an hour's worth on DVD, during which Black spits out his grievances against typical stand-up comedy fodder--corporate scandals, air travel, etc.--in his usual, direct style. (Good line: "If you're in coach, kill yourself.") The only caveat: you'll get nothing extra here. The disc contains the show, brief shots of his entering/exiting the theater, and that's it. No interviews, no commentary track, not even a set of Spanish subtitles. But since Black's routine is stripped-down anger, perhaps it's fitting for the DVD to be stripped-down Black.

Arguably one of George Carlin's most famous and best performances, "Back in Town" came late in his career but combines all his best trademarks - rants on abortion, religion, sex, politics, bodily functions, and capital punishment. Opening with a vicious rant against "pro-life conservative Americans," Carlin begins bringing up points such as, "These people value the sanctity of life - while you're a sperm." He then bitterly moves on towards the death sentence, noting its proposed expansion to cover drug dealers. "You can't give the death sentence to people who don't care about dying!" If you are new to Carlin this is the best place to start - it's easily accessible and is funny, witty and a scathing attack on American society.

This performance marks the first of the "Angry Carlin" group, and is undoubtedly his best work. From the first line "I haven't seen a group this large since they brought together all the criminals and lawbreakers in the Ronald Reagan administration", through his scathing (and sidesplitting) views of American culture, and the second half on cars and driving, this is a must for any comedy fan.

As many of you have already heard, the tragic news... George Carlin, the "dean of counterculture comedians" whose biting insights on life and language were immortalized in his "Seven Words You Can Never Say On TV" routine, died of heart failure Sunday the 22nd of June, 2008. He was 71. Carlin went into a Santa Monica hospital Sunday afternoon complaining of chest pain and died later that evening, said his publicist, Jeff Abraham. Carlin, who had a history of heart trouble, performed as recently as last weekend at the Orleans Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas. It was announced Tuesday that Carlin was being awarded the 11th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
